This is not a complicated issue; however, the Bible is clear on the subject. John 3:3 states the following: "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." What does it mean to be born again? How is this possible? Verses 5 and 6 answer the question- "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."
You see, when we are brought into this world, we are born of the flesh. The problem is that our flesh is sinful. We are all sinners- "As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one." (Romans 3:10) Not only are we sinners, but we must pay for our sin- "For the wages of sin is death;" (Romans 6:23)
"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." (Revelation 20:14-15)
This may sound bleak, but our sin condition places us on the path to an eternity separated from God in a place called Hell. There is good news. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
Jesus Christ, the very Son of God, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and died on the cross to pay for our sins. He made it possible for us to have everlasting life. The Bible says that if we will "believe" or trust Him for salvation, we will be Spiritually born- not for a normal life span but unto eternal life!
Please understand, being born again has nothing to do with living a good life. Salvation can not be bought by money in the offering plate. Our sins cannot be washed away by baptismal waters. We cannot gain salvation by repenting of all our sins. Only by faith in the shed blood of Jesus can we be born again.
The Bible says, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." (Romans 10:13) If you admit that your sin condition places you on the path to Hell, understand that Jesus paid for your sins on the cross, then take a moment and trust Him as Saviour. Seal that decision in prayer to Him right now.
